19 Dead After Apartment Building Fire in the Bronx

Less than a week after a fire ravaged a public housing building in Philadelphia leaving 8 children dead, news outlets are reporting a major fire in a Bronx apartment building that has killed 19.

Nine of the deceased are children. In addition to those killed, thirty-two people have been taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Like so many others fires like it, this tragedy is one that could have been avoided. Building codes do not just make sure buildings are built safely, they ensure that buildings have systems to extinguish fires quickly, have working alarms to notify residents, and have quick and safe escape routes for residents if fires get out of control.

Our hearts were broken in Philadelphia this week when so many innocent lives were lost. It is horrific that something like this could happen again so soon. I am extending my sincerest condolences to the families of the lost, to those injured, and to all those mourning this loss in the city where I was born.
