Birth Injuries Are Common Despite Medical Advancements
February 4, 2019
Even with today’s medical advancements, birth injuries still occur in 7 out of every 1000 deliveries in the United States. In most cases, a birth injury is preventable.
Common birth injuries that may be caused by medical negligence include:
- Cerebral Palsy or “CP” caused by decreased oxygen to the baby’s brain;
- Skull fractures and brain damage can occur when during difficult deliveries when tools are used to assist in the delivery;
- Uterine Rupture can occur during labor; and
- Erb’s Palsy or Shoulder Dystocia, which is a paralysis of an arm from severe nerve damage to the baby during a difficult delivery.
Children with birth injuries may have a number of permanent injuries that often require extensive medical care throughout their lifetime. The medical costs can become overwhelming.
