Statement of Robert J. Mongeluzzi on Today’s Building Collapse 3/17/2016

Philadelphia, PA (March 17, 2016) – “Today’s building collapse serves as the latest stark reminder that Philadelphia and Safety are clearly not synonymous when it comes to building demolition safety. Thankfully, there are no injuries reported in this instance but that apparently was due to fate, not compliance with safety plans and protocols. As investigators sift through the rubble, the City must redouble efforts to enforce tougher demolition safety standards to protect workers and the public, and hold all of those responsible for such disasters fully accountable. It is impossible not to view today’s collapse in the context of the June 5, 2013 fatal Salvation Army building collapse.”
