| Liquor Liability: Keeping
Our Roadways Safe
Drunk driving poses a grave risk to the safety of our roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 17,000 people die in alcohol related traffic accidents each year in our country. NHTSA estimates that alcohol was involved in 39% of fatal crashes in 2005. Further, 254,000 persons were injured in crashes where alcohol was present - an average of one person injured every 2 minutes.
Pennsylvania law requires that bar owners not serve people who are visibly intoxicated. When taverns serve patrons alcohol well past the legal limit, they can be held legally accountable for the harm that drunken patrons cause when they leave the bar and head for the roads. Saltz, Mongeluzzi, Barrett & Bendesky has obtained a $75 million verdict against a bar that served someone past the point of visible intoxication - someone who then got into his car and struck a highway construction worker, rendering him quadriplegic. The Firm has successfully handled many other "Dram Shop" cases as well, all involving drunk drivers who caused incredible harm after drinking well past the legal limit at a bar. Saltz, Mongeluzzi, Barrett & Bendesky has the experience, resources and know-how to prosecute these very complex cases.
